HBL, ZTBL, Karachi Blues win; PIA, NBP frustrated

KARACHI: While Habib Bank cantered to a crushing victory luck again deserted PIA as fine centuries from Saeed bin Nasir and Rizwan Ahmed helped secure an honourable draw for SSGC in the RBS Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship on Monday.

KRL, resuming at 167-4, were dismissed for 241 in the second innings at the National Stadium after Habib Bank set them a massive target of 477 with veteran opener Saeed Anwar Jr carrying his bat for 122. The left-hander batted for 312 minutes and faced 195 balls in his fighting knock that included 16 fours and two sixes.

Test spinners Abdur Rehman (4-65) and Danish Kaneria (3-82) shared the bowling honours as Habib Bank moved to the top of Group ‘A’ standings with maximum 18 points from two matches.

But PIA had to settle for just three points for the second game on the trot as Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) batted throughout the fourth and final day’s play at the UBL Sports Complex to reach 296-4 in the second innings after starting at 59-2.

SSGC’s saviours were skipper Saeed bin Nasir and Rizwan Ahmed who came together to share a fourth-wicket partnership of 169. Saeed, for the umpteenth time, nudged the national selectors with a magnificent innings of 126 – the talented 29-year-old right-hander’s 17th first-class ton – off 240 balls with 15 fours and one six in 349 minutes.

Rizwan finished on 117 not out – a knock lasting 291 minutes – off 198 balls with 10 fours and two sixes.

Karachi Blues, inspired by paceman Tanvir Ahmed’s career-best analysis of 8-53 in 16.5 overs, thrashed hosts Abbottabad by 200 runs to secure top spot in Group ‘B’ with their second straight win.

The 30-year-old Kuwait-born Tanvir finished with a match haul of 13-139 as Abbottabad were all out for 159 in the second innings after the visitors declared their second innings at 262-4 while extending their overall lead to 359. Asad Shafiq (103 not out off 158 balls, 11 fours) and Test discard Asim Kamal (87, nine fours and one six) put on 170 for the fourth wicket.

Wicket-keeper Javed Mansoor also played a big part in Karachi Blues’ success by taking nine catches in the match, including six in the second innings.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore: Wapda nearly turned the tables on National Bank who struggled to draw a fascinating Group ‘A’ match at the Gaddafi Stadium which the bankers should have won.

Wapda, facing a deficit of 188 runs on the first innings, fought back superbly to total 413 after resuming their second innings at 381-9. Bilal Khilji, who was 141 overnight, was the last man out for a splendid 161 after adding 44 priceless runs for the final wicket with fellow left-hander Sarfraz Ahmed (18 not out).

National Bank, chasing a target of 226, then dramatically lost half their side for 40 runs with Pakistan paceman Rana Naved-ul-Hasan sending back Salman Butt (8), Umar Amin (1) and Fawad Alam for a first-ball duck in a hostile burst with the new ball. The lankly left-armer Sarfraz removed Nasir Jamshed (5) and skipper Kamran Akmal (17) but a defiant stand of 73 between Qaiser Abbas (44) and Naumanullah (52 not out) prevented Wapda from a famous win with the bankers hanging on grimly until the end to make 156-7.

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) had no such problems in their opening fixture of the championship as they eased to victory by 97 runs over Lahore Shalimar at the LCCA Ground.

The regional outfit were all out for 310 after starting the final day at 166-3 in pursuit of a tough 408-run target. Opener Abid Ali added only five more to his Sunday’s tally of 81 while Salman Khan made 53. Pakistan star off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took 3-65 to finish with match figures of 7-118 in 58.5 overs.

Multan and Lahore Ravi, meanwhile, had to settle for three first-innings points after their Group ‘B’ matches against Sialkot and Faisalabad, respectively, were drawn.
