Govt to bear all rehabilitation costs: Gilani
PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani declared on Thursday that the government of Pakistan will bear all the expenses for rehabilitating the terror affected areas of the country.
Speaking to the media in Peshawar, Gilani informed reporters that Rs10 billion have already been released for the war torn regions.
Gilani said that residents belonging to terror struck areas will be exempted from taxes on electricity. He added that the electricity charges for Swat and Malakand will be waived off for the months of June and July.
Gilani said that terrorism affected areas have been divided into three separate areas. The first category consists of Dir, Malakand and Swat, the second consists of Swabi, Bannu and D.I. Khan and the third category comprises Mansehra, Kohistan and Battagram. Gilani also assured the people of the NWFP that the entire nation is with them.
Gilani called the return of displaced people from the NWFP to their homes as one of the greatest success stories in the history of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, traders and businessmen from NWFP rejected the prime minister’s package saying that the province must be declared war-hit.
Touching upon the issue of Balochistan, the prime minister said that the Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan package is the right of the people belonging to the province and should not be seen as financial aid.
Gilani further stated that the government is doing its level best to address the issues of the country and that the current democratic set up has managed to achieve in a little less than two years, what dictatorial regimes could not achieve in decades.
Talking about the power crisis in the country, Gilani said that a structured long term strategy is required to overcome the electricity shortage. He was confident that the government will be able to handle the sugar crisis in the country.
