LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet has approved the Punjab Local Government Act Amendments Bill which is likely to be tabled in the Punjab Assembly Wednesday.
According to the Bill, local bodies’ elections will be held within a period of six months.
A cabinet meeting, held under the chairmanship of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore, discussed the ways through which the working of the local government system could be improved.
Shahbaz Sharif also gave approval to the deployment of administrators.
As per the proposed bill, accountability and transparency would be the most important part of the local government system.
In a media briefing after the meeting, provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah said the cabinet discussed each clause of the bill in order to make the system transparent.
He said local bodies’ election will be held within six months. A local bodies’ election authority will also be established and its head will be a qualified individual equivalent to a Supreme or High Court judge. — DawnNews
